Jammu, December 6: The 18th Veeranna Aivalli Memorial Debate on “Road Accidents” was organized today in the Brig. Rajinder Singh Memorial Auditorium of Jammu University. The debate was organized by Indian Institute of Public Administration (IIPA) J&K Police Chapter, J&K Police in collaboration with Department of Students Welfare, University of Jammu.
Vice Chancellor, University of Jammu Prof. Manoj K. Dhar was the Chief Guest while Additional Director General of Police Shri A. G. Mir was the Guest of Honour on the occasion and Dr. Ashok Bhan IPS (Retd.) Patron IIPA J&K Regional Branch presided over the function.
In his address Vice Chancellor of the Jammu University Prof. Manoj K. Dhar said that Jammu University is committed to host the Veeranna Aivalli debates every year. He said that it gives pleasure and privilege that the University associated with the one of the distinguished Police officers Shri Veeranna Aivalli, who is a source of inspiration not only for the officers of J&K Police but also society in general and for the students.
While thanking the Patron IIPA Dr Bhan and the Jammu University the Guest of Honour Shri A.G Mir ADGP Headquarters (PHQ) said that it gives him immense pleasure to be part of the programme. He said that Shri Veerana Aivalli has set an example for us by his professional competence, un-impeachable integrity and above all bridging the gap between the administration and the civil society. It is because of his great vision that about 30 percent police officers are associated with Indian Institute of Public Adminstration and the credit goes to the Shri Veeranna Aivalli, founder of the Jammu Kashmir chapter of IIPA.
Referring to the debate topic, the ADGP said that the 1.5 lakh deaths occur every year in the country and about 1000 lose their lives in Jammu and Kashmir every year in road accidents, which he termed as a matter of concern for all of us. He said that J&K Police is committed to the goal to provide safe roads and added that we have a programme under implementation to use technology for traffic management and implementation of laws. He said that J&K Police is installing CCTV cameras to monitor the road violations and implement laws in a better way. The ADGP said that besides a deterrent action on the traffic violators, awareness among the society in general has a key role to play.
The ADGP also praised the participants for their confident and extempore performance. He said that IIPA is doing a great job by organizing such meaningful and valuable debates. He said that IIPA over the years has a great tradition of having very vibrant and lively debates.
In his presidential address Dr. Ashok Bhan IPS (Retd.) Pattron IIPA J&K Regional Branch highlighted the contributions of Late Shri Veeranna Aivalli and said that attending this programme every year is like a pilgrimage for him. He said that Shri Veeranna Aivalli was a person who practiced ‘integrity as a way of life’ throughout his life. He said that it is not easy to sustain memorial lecture for eighteen years and added that it is because of the leadership quality of Shri Aivalli that year after year we gather to affectionately celebrate the widely admired Police officer.
Referring to the debate Dr Bhan said that to bring the systematic change, citizens have to be prepared to respect the law. He said parents, teachers and social workers must play their role in transforming youth to law abiding citizens.
Among others wife of the Shri Veeranna Aivalli Smt. Swarn Aivalli and other members of Aivalli family, galaxy of serving and retired bureaucrats, police officers, academicians and students were present. On the conclusion of the function cash prizes, trophies and certificates were distributed.
